How To Liven Up Dark Rooms In The Home
While there's nothing wrong with using dark furniture and furnishings in your home, too many dark-colored items will draw the walls in on itself, making the room appear smaller and more confined. In addition, rooms that use a full black or dark color scheme usually aren't as relaxing or enjoyable to be in; therefore, you naturally won't get as much use out of them. Thankfully, however, there are some simple and easy ways for homeowners to brighten up dark rooms without spending a fortune on remodeling or buying new furniture.
If you're still using black curtains, you should consider swapping them out for a brighter, more vibrant color. Curtains are one of the most visible pieces of wall decorations in the home, so you should use this to your advantage by going with a brighter color. Even if the room features black furniture, you can likely compliment the decor with a cream, red or beige-colored curtains. Just choose a color contrasts with the dark colors already used in your living room.
Of course you don't have to limit yourself to only using curtains found at home furnishing and department stores. If you're good on the sewing machine, you can buy some fabric and make your own curtains with a little bit of work. Chances are you'll save a good bit of money and come with curtains that are exactly what you want.
Mirrors naturally bounce the light created by lamps and overhead lighting fixtures through your home. Whether you want to hang them on a wall or place them on a shelf is up to you. You don't have to go overboard with your mirrors, but try to at least use one somewhere in the room to help illuminate it. One of the easiest ways to use a mirror is to place it directly over the fireplace. As long as you choose a medium-to-large size mirror, it should fit in just right here.
Crystal Lamps and Furnishings
Going back to the principle of how mirrors brighten up a room, crystal lamps and furniture does the same. When the light hits the crystal, it's magnified and reflected throughout the room, creating an instantly brighter room. So, just what types of crystal items can you use? Along with lamps that feature a crystal base, there are also crystal bowls, vases, sculptures and other decorations. Just remember to place them in areas around lamps or overhead lighting to get the most benefit.
