Outdoor Patio Decor and Design Tips

Posted by Doug Gardner on

With summer right around the corner, there’s no better time than now to decorate and design your patio. The patio is an outdoor extension of the home; therefore, you should invest some of your time and energy into creating an attractive, functional decor that exhibits similar characteristics as the rest of your home. For some helpful patio decor and design tips, keep reading.

It’s difficult to fully enjoy everything a patio has to offer if it’s nestled alongside a cluttered, poorly manicured lawn. The sight of overgrown grass, weeds, and unwanted brush will negatively impact the atmosphere surrounding your home, taking away from its natural beauty. It may seem like an otherwise insignificant element, but poorly manicured lawns can drastically affect a patio’s decor.

The good news is that you can prevent this from happening by cutting the lawn and edging any sidewalks and driveways around your home. Staying on top of your lawn maintenance can make a world of different in the visual aesthetics of both your home and your patio.

You can’t expect to achieve an attractive, functional patio without the proper seating. A proper seating arrangement will turn your patio into a fully functional area where guests and family members can relax and converse among one another. Without seating, your entire patio will suffer as a result.

Choosing seating for a patio or any other outdoor area requires a bit more thought than indoor seating due to the possibility of moisture damage. Most cotton and synthetic fabric blends are susceptible to damage caused by rainfall and high humidity. You can always take the route of using plastic chairs on your patio, but a more sophisticated option is to furnish it with authentic teak chairs and lounges.

Teak is a brilliant, attractive wood that’s highly resistant to moisture thanks to the presence of natural oils that combat the fungi responsible for rot. You can rest assured knowing that your teak chairs will withstand the constant battering of rain and the elements on your patio.

Decorating an Outdoor Patio:

  • Define a clear walkway for guests and family members to access, and leave, the patio.
  • Incorporate color into the decor by using both artificial decorative accessories and natural plant life.
  • If sunlight shines directly into your patio’s seating area, try setting up a sunshade netting or privacy screen.
  • Use faux rocks to hide garden hoses.
