Overcoming Workplace Woes: Tips To Reduce Stress Levels

It should come as no surprising that the work is one of the most common triggers of stress in today’s society. Having to deal with an irate boss, unfriendly coworkers, meeting strict deadlines, and worrying about the possibility of being laid off can take a toll on workers, causing undue stress in the workplace.

According to the Minneapolis-based insurance company Northwestern National Life, 25% of workers in the U.S. view their job as being the “number one stressor in their lives.” Work-related stress is a trend that’s on the rise, with more and more workers claiming to suffer from adverse symptoms related to stress.

Stress effects the body in a number of different ways, some of which include:

  • Elevated blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Insomnia
  • Weakened immune system
  • Low energy levels
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Headaches
  • Heartburn
  • Upset stomach
  • Chest pains
  • Sudden weight gain

How To Overcome Workplace Stress

The root cause of work-related stress typically goes back to the workers’ environment. Employers whom fail to provide a safe, comfortable environment will suffer the consequences of stressed workers. So, how can you promote a relaxed, low-stress workplace?

Ergonomics plays an important role in workplace stress levels. The term “ergonomics” refers to the process of fitting an environment to better meet the needs of workers. This may include replacing old office chairs with comfortable, lumbar-supporting chairs, or placing cushioned pads on hard concrete areas where workers are forced to stand in place for 6 or more hours per day. The primary goal of ergonomics is to protect workers from muskuskeletal disorders, but a secondary benefit associated with its implementation is reduced stress levels.

From a worker’s standpoint, work-related stress can also be reduced by practicing breathing exercises, yoga, or even light exercises. Exercising, especially cardiovascular exercise, releases natural chemicals in the body known as endorphines. These endorphines create something known as a “runner’s high” — a feeling of happiness and content.
